hollow house hyperstition
(mixed media cyanotype, looping video, October 2024)
A figure turned inward by their distorted memories of events they've never experienced. a nebula reaches out a tendril, unknown to us if it means to save or harm.
video is sourced from home video footage circa 2002, wherein my family takes one last look at the house I started my life in before we moved to new york city. i do not remember this event, nor the subsequent move. my memories began after being transplanted. I then edited the footage using photoshop tools.
"hyperstition" is a term coined by philosophers mark fisher and nick land, which describes cultural feedback loops—— ideas and beliefs that make themselves real through their dissemination. i use the term loosely here in the title of the piece to refer to memories i only have through the viewing of home video footage taken by my parents; this is an era of my life i only have access to through the eyes of others.
